Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
Looks like all the school boys have picked up their marbles and gone home. Good riddance. Boycotting Wall Street Breakfast because of a switch to a just-as-competent editor will not detract from its popularity. I can assure you the kids are still reading it - but mistakenly think their action will have a negative effect.... Reply

TiVo's Patent Victory Stands Strong [view article]
. It is incredible that Echostar's Ergen is so arrogant to the point of trying to bring a case that is not an issue for the Supreme Court. Moreover, Echostar should be settling with TiVo--if you search the history of Echostar record in courts for stealing and infringing patents and copyrights is overwhelming.
When criminals repeat and repeat their crimes they must be punished NOT protected. I don’t understand why TiVo did not appealed for Treble Damages.

DirecTV Dumps TiVo, I Dump DirecTV [view article]
Well, I've had DTV 8 years, and SD Tivo in various incarnations since day 1. No cable out here so no options. Three years ago I just bought a 4 Hughes Series 2 TiVo's, upgraded them to 250GB, hacked them with Weetheet's really simple method and voila! Ethernet at 100Mbit, multi room viewing from the hard drive of all the TiVO's, remote web interface, download recordings to PC, the lot. Cost practically nothing although a few hours on the phone persuading DTV to activate them :-)

Now .. no HD. A bit stuck. Then I discovered TVersity, and D-Link media players. I can probably just about live with DTV's HD DVR for HD programming, as long as that's all it needs to do.

And yes, I have Verizon FiOS (30/15) but they won't deliver video to my address, some franchise problem.

    Echostar/Dish? Not an option.

Why is this so hard? I'm reasonably computer savvy, have an enormous fiber internet pipe, and I'm struggling to get the functionality the Hughes TiVO had 5 years ago.

Should have gotten an AppleTV. It syncs with YouTube account. I love it. YouTube rocks, endless amounts of entertainment on there. I thought YouTube had been on TiVo forever, guess I was mistaken. Reply

    General Discussion on TIVO
Wow. Good question. I hold the stock and don't know. One thing that would help me decide is if someone could clear up exactly how strong the Tivo technology patents are. Since they've won the lawsuit with DISH Networks (but still haven't collected??), it's been said they have rock solid patents on time-shifting and can go after other companies producing DVRs. It looks like they chose to align with Comcast through software upgrading of the Comcast DVRs, but I can never find news on where that's at.

They'll probably have to collect the ~$100 million from Dish before they can sue other manufacturers, but I thought I also read that Comcast has been granted rights to deliver it's OnDemand service with licensed content delivered by servers... so back to the original question... is this a buy or a sell???
