      Will Storm’s Delays Hurt RIMM’s Q3?
The stock only closed up $0.42 which is less than 1% in comparison to Apple up 12 % and the Nasdaq up 6.33%.

Rimm counts a sale as a delivery to the carrier not to the ultimate user. My guess is that Verizon who never shows the phone being used (unless the video is simulated) knows that the phone has software issues. 8 of the 12 reviews I saw said it was disappointing. I used one live at Circuit City but Best Buy had no demos. They did have a video screen tv showing it being used and it looks like the software is quick. My test though and many reviewers notes that the software hangs and locks ups a lot.

Verizon must have ordered a small initial volume and sold them all. Now that the must have blackberry fanboys have bought their phones, can they sell anymore is the big question.

Expectations for RIMM: Analysts Continue to Differ
It appears that the initial review on the Storm coming out Friday on Verizon's network are giving the phone a nice try but not ready for prime time and definitely no iphone. I assume a lot of money was spent on this project and if it flops Rimm will have damaged their name tremendously.

Reading Apple: iPhone Sales Slightly Off, MacBook OK
I purchased a new iphone on Thursday night to replace my 2g iphone which I handed down to my daughter. Out of the 10 people that were in the store while I was there for about 30 minutes, the couple in front of me bought an iphone, I bought an iphone and everyone else looked at the iphone. No one looked at the bold. 3 guys were told to go to the Apple store (not sure why). My checks at my apple store is that people are buying the Iphone. As for my personal checks, at the Richmond Marathon this week at least 4 of my personal friends are considering one and of my wife's group most of them want it.

I think sales will be good this quarter and even better thanks to Verizon advertising the storm. If the phone is not as good as the iphone, than many verizon customers who are on the fence may finally switch to AT&T and the iphone.

      Opposing Views on RIMM's Future
      One more problem

Verizon Wireless has stores in Circuit City. In my city almost half of the AT&T stores are in Circuit City's which may not be in business much longer. 5 stores in Circuit City out of 13 stores.

The fact that Verizon is tied in with Circuit City also hurts Verizon as a brand. Also since the Circuit is in bankruptcy will they even have many phones in inventory. I cannot imagine that Rimm sold phones to the Circuit on the hope of getting paid back.

      Opposing Views on RIMM's Future
Went to the AT&T store last night and Rimm is definitely getting the short end on the marketing of the new bold. Apple has a prominent spot in the middle of the store with a giant lcd screen showing the iphone. The blackberries while at the very front of the store got no looks from any customers. Out of the ten peoplei watched not one asked about the Bold yet all looked at or inquired about the iphone. 3 of the 10 bought an iphone and 3 were referred to the Apple store but I am not sure why.

The AT&T Salesman said he liked the bold but that it was overpriced. He further stated that iphones were still selling really well.

The big day for Rimm is next Friday when the Storm goes on sale. If they have lines then Rimm may be ok. No lines for their consumer phone and you can put one more nail in the cofffin or $10 more downside prior to earnings.

      Dell's Got a Demand Problem
Not only is it a demand problem but they are also cutting prices and cutting margins. Dell's big problem is no value ad to the computer. It is like a generic drug. Why buy Comtrex when you can buy the CVS brand. In Dell's case HP, Lenova, Acer, etc all make pcs and they all are pretty similar. Apple is the only computer that has a value ad which is the mac OS. Dell needs to add something useful. HP is trying to add touch to their computers but it still appears like a gimmick but at least they are trying to differentiate their brand.

The question is, if Dell went out of business would anyone miss them or could you just buy a similar computer from another PC maker.

      What's RIMM's Problem?
UBS cut their price target to $50.00. Bold and Storm released late in the quarter. Will rimm miss for the 3rd quarter in a row. Questions as to whether Rimm's new products are that great. The bold was reviewed as the best blackberry ever but not revolutionary. WSJ noted it was big (as in size). The storm is being released at the same price as the iphone which means it has to be really good or people may pass on it. Way too much risk with this one trick pony.

News Flash: Music Industry Still Lost
The problem is the music industry which was needed to find talent, record it, make the cds and music videos, and then market the band. Now what stops someone from recording their own music, selling it on itunes, marketing it on myspace. Where is the need for Warner Bros.

Apple's cut is so small that they have nothing to give. The record company gets $.70 per song but only share about $.18 with the artist. The record industry is the middleman that technology is eliminating.

Apple vs. RIM: Study Shows iPhone More Reliable than Blackberry
Wait until they do this at the 18 month mark. If you listen to the Rimm conference call, the average blackberry is only used for 18 moonths which is pathetic.

My iphone is now at 16 months with no problems. I have dropped it in parking lots, dropped it on concrete floors, caught the earbud cord on a shopping cart and had it fly across the grocery store. Even kicked it facedown across my garage floor. No scratches on the screen. Did manage to get one tiny scratch which may have been while golfing with the divot tool in my pocket.

My wife has retired her iphone after she dropped it for the 20th time. Concrete, wood, pavement were no problem but dropping the phone on a tile floor managed to put a hairline crack from top to bottom. Problem was that it still worked like it had never been dropped. So she got a 3g and now the iphone is being used by the kids.

PS: the battery still works great. The only reason that Blackberry needs a battery door is so that when it locks up you can open it, remove the battery, reinstall the battery, close the phone and reboot. Now that is ridiculous. I used to have to do that with my Sony Ericsson phone that lasted 4 years.

RIM Faces a Critical Month As Apple Gets Tough
Still Rimm is spreading itself way too thin. They have 3 new phones

      Flip - 2g phone
      Bold - 3g phone
Storm - evdo 3g with touchscreen
      Javelin - 2g curve replacement

They sell to 400 different carriers which means multiple versions of each phone. Apple has one phone, one version, one software version.

      Rimm has numerous operating systems.

Rimm is trying to start an app store that should begin in March of 2009. Are developers going to write software for all 4 phones. How will that work. What if sales do not ramp this Christmas while Apple has already sold 200 million downloads as of 2 weeks ago.

The pricing is problematic. The bold is $299. Isn't that a bit high in comparison to the iphone. In Canada, Rogers just cut the price so how long will the 299 hold up here. The Flip is around $150 depending on rebate which is too much for a 2g phone.

Rimm is spending big money on marketing showing ads that don't show the phone doing anything. Even when they show the phone the phone image is computer generated such as people's faces. They are trying to promote life on blackberry but never show it working. The storm has been advertised but never shows the screen. Why?? Apple is advertising all the time, showing the phone doing the app store, directions, gaming, etc. They are advertising the touch like crazy which is the iphone without the phone. The funnest ipod ever is a pretty cool example of what the phone can do. They run the mac vs.pc ads so Apple is everywhere and seems to be mocking everyone else that their products are the best.

As an investment, Apple is in computers, software, mp3 players, phones, wifi gadgets, Servers, routers, music, movies, tv, and they have retail stores where they sell their stuff and other people's add on products.

Rimm is in phones and software, and they make a server.

Pretty easy investment decision, Apple is way more diversified.

Who Will Win the Home Entertainment Battle?
The author assumes Apple TV is only good for streaming paid movies and tv. Uses for Apple TV that the author does not understand.

      1. Connects your home entertainment center to iTunes. Now you can stream over the air or by wire your entire iTunes library to your tv/surround system. Do people still have stereos?

      2. Allows for all of your photo libraries to be used as a screen saver while music is playing. Everyone that has ever seen this asks how we do it.

      3. You can play all of your movies and tv shows that are in itunes.

      4. You can watch content that you load into iTunes such as DVD's, tivo recordings, etc.

      5. You tube on the Tv. Kids love this.

      6. You iPhone becomes your remote.

Call it a flop if you want but it is a neat device for certain uses, just like a tivo is a great dvr if you want a dvr. A dvd would be nice but why buy a dvd when you can buy the movie in Itunes. Lastly, why buy dvd's period unless they are kid movies. Are you really going to watch Superbad 10 times on a dvd when you could tape it to your dvr or computer for free.
