11 things you need to know about the iPhone 11

So much in advance: The smartphone reinvented, as in 2007 with the first iPhone, Apple does not have this year. And it will be really exciting for fans anyway in 2020, with the first 5G iPhones, which should also bring a completely new design. Nevertheless, Apple offers especially with excellent cameras and much longer battery life so much new that just for owners of older iPhones with Home button now worth the transition.

The first impression

Do it colorful: Unfortunately, there is only the iPhone 11 in these colors, but not the 11 Pro (Photo: Apple)

Of course, the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max with glossy stainless steel frame look better than the normal iPhone 11 made of aluminum. In addition, the matte back is noticeably grippier than the smooth glass back of the normal 11er in the Pro models Hands slips. But the colors of the entry-level model are fancier and fresher than the Pro, in which the new night green also comes in very bad nature. Especially the 6.5 inch Pro Max is very powerful. In figures: It weighs 226 grams – in the smaller iPhone 7, it was still 138 grams in 2016. If you do not really need the big screen, you’re better off with the iPhone 11 (6.1 inches) and the rather handy 11 Pro (5.8 inches).

The start

Setting up and transferring the data from the old to the new iPhone has made Apple even easier and faster. Previously, the new iPhone had to load the backup from the cloud or from iTunes. Now, the old iPhone transfers most of the data directly to the new device that is off-site. Do not be alarmed if you first see a transfer time of seven hours. This value goes back quickly. A well-filled 256 GB iPhone transmits its data in about one and a half hours. Fast and practical!

The screens

Taken alone, the LCD screen of the iPhone 11 is excellent. Nobody will complain about this display. Only when there is an 11 Pro with OLED screen right next to it, you can see how much brighter, more contrast-rich and more colorful the Pro-Display is. Here black is really black as the night. Compared to the predecessor XS, the 11 Pro has again increased in terms of brightness and contrast. The maximum brightness has risen from 625 to 1,200 nits. Who puts XS and 11 Pro next to each other, marvels at the progress within a year. The screen of the 11 Pro almost fades at maximum brightness and is brilliantly readable even in sunlight.

The batteries

The 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max batteries offer up to 25 percent more capacity than their predecessors. For Apple has made the two models by 0.4 millimeters thicker, but this is virtually unnoticeable. Very noticeable, however, are the officially increased by four or five hours battery life. Our first test activates this quantum leap: After two hours of Netflix at medium brightness, the XS still has 72 percent battery left, and the 11 Pro has 84 percent. Battery progress on the iPhone 11 is less noticeable in practice. But after all, it should run an hour longer than its predecessor XR.

The chargers

Well finally! At least the Pro models Apple now adds a contemporary 18-watt power supply that brings an empty iPhone in half an hour to 50 percent. The new charger comes with a USB-C socket. The no longer dewy Lightning connection on all new iPhones remains however. Although the iPhone 11 also dominates fast loading. But here Apple continues to pack the slow 5-watt charger into the box. If you want to load faster, Apple pays 35 euros for an 18-watt power supply, and also needs the right cable from USB-C to Lightning. For Apple takes 25 meters with a meter length. Incomprehensible with a 799 euro smartphone.

The cameras

The new cameras are the main attraction on the 2019 iPhones – and also shine in the first test. The iPhone 11 Apple has in addition to the previous wide-angle lens (26 mm) additionally an ultra-wide angle (13 mm) donated. As a result, much more of the subject fits in with the picture – a giant plus, especially in landscape scenes or in confined spaces. Unfortunately, a telephoto is missing to zoom in on subjects. Because the digital zoom continues to produce only mushy pixels.

11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have additionally built a telephoto with 52 millimeters of focal length as the third lens. This allows for a 4x optical zoom. Compared to the XS, which has just overdrawn images in HDR mode and often bleached them out, all three new iPhones deliver extremely sharp, high-contrast and color-intensive photos. And all of them now also photograph pets in portrait mode with a blurred background. The magazine The Verge puts it in a nutshell: “The best cameras available in a smartphone.” This comforts over the square Kameruckuckel on the back away – which unfortunately is no better in real life than in photos.

The camera extras

Simpler and smarter: Apple has significantly redesigned the camera app (Photo: Apple)

Applause! Ink! All new iPhones finally photograph in a contemporary format 16: 9, which fills the current screens better than the old-fashioned 4: 3. Anyone who wanted to shoot with the iPhone in 16: 9 needed apps like ProCamera. Now it works well with on-board resources. The setting can be found in the completely revised camera app of the new iPhones, which is much clearer and easier to use than before. It makes many additional apps for photography unnecessary.

For filming, users no longer need to go to video mode, just stay with their finger on the shutter button. For multi-image mode, which has been started so far, the shutter button is pushed aside. Especially clever: When photographing with wide-angle or telephoto, the iPhone stores the data of the ultra wide-angle for 30 days on request. Thus, the image can be enlarged later if necessary. This useful option is called “taking a picture outside the frame”. You can see how important the camera app is for the new iPhones. Apple has invested a lot of brainwash here.

The night mode

Night feelings: The new night mode brings light into the dark (Photo: Apple)

So far, iPhone owners could only jealously look at the night mode of the Google Pixel 3, which provides stunning images with artificial intelligence in twilight and darkness. The Night Envy is over now. For both the iPhone 11 and the 11 Pro and Pro Max is now also a night mode on board, which provides at least comparable images. In many cases, even more details can be seen in the iPhone night mode than in the Pixel 3.

The night mode is very easy to activate: It turns on itself in bad light – and shows the user how many seconds he has to hold the iPhone as quietly as possible. And with a tripod you can take night photos with up to 28 seconds exposure time. For the Pro models Apple improves in the fall by software update the photos in bad light again. Then the new “Deep Fusion” mode combines nine images with different exposures into a single photo.

The selfies

Selfie or Slofie? The revised front camera offers many new possibilities (Photo: Apple)

Instead of the previous 7-megapixel front camera, Apple is building a 12-megapixel model for all three new iPhones. More exciting than the higher resolution is the option to photograph for the first time at the front via wide-angle. The difference between normal mode and wide angle is not too big – but one or the other person then also suits selfie. Almost a built-in selfie stick (the Samsung, Huawei and Google but have been offering for a long time)! The new slow motion selfie videos at 120 frames per second that Apple has dubbed “slofies” are an amusing toy – but need planning and a corresponding environment to look really good. Our results were so far very manageable …

The rest

Face ID should work faster on the new iPhones. Really, this is not the case in everyday life (Photo: Apple)

To make room for larger batteries, Apple has deleted iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max 3D Touch – the feature that has measured the strength of finger pressure on the display to trigger various actions. Instead, all new iPhones now use Haptic Touch, which only registers if it is pressed longer or not. You can feel that Haptic Touch reacts slower than 3D Touch, and has to switch to actions such as moving folders or setting the cursor on the keyboard. A big loss is the little-used 3D touch but not. In addition, iPhones and iPads can now all be operated in the same way with Haptic Touch. Incidentally, face recognition Face ID should now react faster and from larger angles. But nothing was noticeable in the LEAD test.

The right model

The right thing I Phone 11
Two lenses or three lenses, iPhone 11, 11 Pro or Pro Max? Apple fans have the choice (Photo: Apple)

For the vast majority of users, the standard model iPhone 11 is the most sensible choice from 799 euros. It is relatively cheap – for an iPhone. Because Apple requires only 50 euros for doubling the 64 GB memory, the 128 GB version for 849 euros is the clear buying tip. This space is usually sufficient in the iCloud age, where many content is stored in the Apple cloud. The maximum memory of 256 GB for the iPhone 11 is already much more expensive with 969 euros.

The extra charge for the 11 Pro (from € 1,149) or for the 11 Pro Max (from € 1,249) should really pay only absolute photo fans – or lovers of movies and series that have the perfect picture quality on the OLED screen of the Pro models want. For such claims, the 64 GB of the cheapest variants but too little. 256 GB for 1,319 Euro (Pro) or 1,419 Euro (Pro Max) are the best compromise. The also offered 512 GB can hardly be filled.
