E3: The 10 most important news from the games fair

This year the E3 has to let feathers. Top companies such as Sony or Electronic Arts are not represented with their own stands. And Nintendo will not show its novelties at an elaborate press conference, but on Tuesday (11 June) from 18 clock German time as “Nintendo Direct” video stream on his YouTube channel. The trend away from the big fairs, to the manufacturer’s own shows, continues. According to Sony, the June trade date is already too late to plan for Christmas. Games news in harsh quantities are there to start the E3 anyway. And for Sony competitor Microsoft jumped into the breach – and showed on his E3 show within 90 minutes about 60 new games for Xbox One, for the Xbox successor called “Scarlett” and for Windows 10.

Xbox Scarlett

After Sony had already delivered the first vague information about PlayStation 5 in April, including 8K support, Microsoft moved now at the E3. But the Americans did not go into detail either. For the moment, nobody wants to look at the cards in terms of next-generation consoles. The “Xbox Two” as well as the PS5 end of 2020 appear. The name is still open, currently the project runs under the code name “Scarlett”. According to Microsoft, the next Xbox should be four times stronger than the current flagship “Xbox One X”.

A newly developed AMD chip and SSD memory ensure speed. Also, the new Xbox creates 8K, and at 4K to see extremely fluid 120 frames per second. Good news for gamers: According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, “Scarlett” has “thousands of games from all four Xbox generations”. Not only the Trusted Reviews magazine is wondering if such monster consoles will be needed in two or three years – or whether they will be pushed out of the game streaming: “The Xbox 2 and the PS5 make a great impression, but they are already old-fashioned. “

Project xCloud

Google has already announced in advance of E3 its streaming games “Stadia”, which transmits even the most complex games on virtually any hardware – regardless of the graphics performance of a smartphone, a tablet or a TV. Microsoft holds against, with “Project xCloud”, which goes into trial operation in October 2019. Again, the games come from the Internet cloud. At the E3 is now the racing game hit “Forza Horizon 4” in brilliant quality on smartphones to see. With fast Internet lines, the game streaming works already excellent. How it beats in everyday life German DSL connections, but remains to be seen.

Promising idea from Microsoft: Xbox gamers can also stream the games from their own console to mobile phones. Soon, the best games in the world will end up on smartphones that do not need expensive hardware anymore. With its worldwide server parks, Microsoft is so well positioned for streaming games that Sony also wants to use the infrastructure of its US competitor for its future own offering. The two giants have signed an agreement and are working together against the Google offensive.

Halo Infinite

The sixth game of the first-person shooter series “Halo” is the first and only launch title for the Xbox “Scarlett”, which Microsoft announced at E3. Previously, “Halo Infinite” but already in late 2019 or early 2020 for Xbox One and PC appear. After the rather disappointing “Halo 5: Guardians” of 2015, Microsoft eliminated the number “6” from the title. This is to show that the in-house developer 343 Industries this time cuts off old braids. Spieleheld Master Chief is still on board. He experiences, according to Microsoft “his biggest adventure so far to save humanity.” Important preliminary information for fans: The Part-5 painfully missing split screen for local duels returns by popular demand.

Cyberpunk 2077

The superstar of this year’s E3 is already set. It is Matrix hero Keanu Reeves aka Neo, who performed live on stage his promising action role-playing game “Cyberpunk 2077”. The fans celebrated him with huge cheers and shouts like “You’re breathtaking”. “Cyberpunk 2077” is the work of the renowned Polish studio CD Projekt, which became known for its hit series “The Witcher”. More than 400 people are currently working on the game to be released on April 16, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Reeves plays in the gloomy California metropolis Night City Rockerboy Johnny Silverhand, who can stock up on his body with various spare parts.

The predecessor “FIFA 19” was as usual Germany’s most successful game of the year – although in the opinion of many FIFA fans he has more flaws than a dog fleas. Among the shortcomings are a messed up career mode, the botched new shooting technique “Timed Finishing”, the questionable artificial intelligence of players and referees and defensive tactics of computer opponents. With “FIFA 20” manufacturer EA Sports wants to eliminate as many problems as possible, and introduce with “Volta Football” a new indoor and street football mode in which men and women kick together for the first time.

Because hardly a FIFA gambler has the chance to play even in large stadiums, Volta should bring the football according to EA “back to its roots” – on streets, squares and in gyms. Because players can stock up on a lot of accessories, that sounds like lots of in-app purchases to fill EA’s coffers. “FIFA 20” will be released on September 27, 2019 for all current platforms – with Nintendo’s switch console again receiving only a slimmed-down “legacy” mode.

Gears 5

The action game series was called since the premiere in 2006 always “Gears of War”. However, Microsoft has now removed the title from the title to make the fifth part even more interesting for the mainstream. The hero is a heroine: Kait Diaz is not new in the “Gears” universe, but takes over the lead role for the first time. It comes from the locusts, a man-monster mix, and goes in search of their ancestors. “Gears 5” will be released on September 10, 2019 for Xbox One and PC – and offers a very special twist. Pre-orderers and subscribers of the “Xbox Game Pass” can also play the game with the characters from “Terminator: Dark Fate”, which will be released on November 1st. Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800 Terminator and Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor are in the game as extra downloads.

Doom Eternal

A quarter of a century after the release of the first Doom, a new episode of the legendary slaughter is still an event. “Doom Eternal” comes on November 22, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC – and should be one of the first big hits for Google Stadia show how well game streaming works today. Creative Director Hugo Martin of developer id Software promises “twice as many monsters” as its predecessor from 2016.

The Doom Slayer is the main character again hit back the forces of hell, including a butcher hook as a scary new weapon. With the new system “Destructible Demons” the hellish opponents fall in the course of the fight slowly together and dissolve downright. That does not necessarily mean that it’s free for the elderly, but it’s about well-groomed Splatter entertainment, as Doom fans love it. Two expansion packs within the first year have already been announced and can be purchased as a Battle Pass.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Those who are not exactly familiar with the “Call of Duty” universe will be confused by manufacturer Activision. For a game called “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” was released in 2007. And from 2009 comes “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”. Ten years later, on October 25, 2019, comes “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The title sounds like a predecessor of the 2009 game, but is a successor. Everything understood?

Clearly clearer, what Activision plans for the content: The new “CoD” is to become more current and realistic, with topics ranging from terror to the Middle East conflict. One of the scenes is the worn-out ex-Soviet state of Urzekstan. And the game is said to require such a complex moral decision that some of the testers have erupted while playing – supposedly – in tears. Whether “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” is really so rousing, fans can try for the first time even with cross-platform games, beyond console boundaries.

Death Stranding

Sony is not represented at the E3, but showed in advance in a stream the upcoming hit, waiting for all fans of Japanese gaming culture. “Death Stranding”, released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019, is the new (potential) masterpiece of “Metal Gear Solid” creator Hideo Kojima – and the first game from his own “Kojima Productions” after his departure from Konami.

The title refers to whales being washed ashore on beaches, often for unknown reasons. Life and death are the central themes of “Death Stranding,” in which Kojima tells of society in a not-too-distant future, where people have built walls between themselves and live apart. The goal of the game is to tear down these walls and reunite an isolated society. Among the leading actors are the Hollywood stars Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro.

Marvel’s Avengers

On Monday evening US time Square Enix has presented the game re-enactment of the cinema super hit “Avengers: Endgame” at E3. However, the enthusiasm in the audience was muted, because the leading actor Chris Evans or Scarlett Johansson apparently do it for licensing reasons not on console and PC. Instead, in “Marvel’s Avengers” with fictitious performers gambled – which should be for fans of the film only half the pleasure.

“We have our own version of the team,” explains Square Enix. How much fun that can be, from 15 May 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia try. At least the plot sounds promising: Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are torn apart by a disaster at the inauguration of their Avengers headquarters in San Francisco, but rejoin five years later – as last hope, to the drowned Save the world.
